Along with the Moorhen, today’s outing to Ferry Meadows Country Park also revealed a Great Crested Grebe, although it spent quite a bit of its time hiding under the water. I’m told this wonderful bird used to be almost extinct in the 1860s as it was the fashion to have hats made out of their skin (not good!). The UK population reduced to just 42 pairs. Now its over 5,000. Great to see they are breeding in Peterborough.
